Reflection of AED 200

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? My expectations for this course was to learn more about the different stlyes of art, be introduced to some new artists, and learn how to use different forms fo technology that relate to art. My expectations were met due to the number of projects that were required using new technolgies. I also learned a lot about different artists while reading the textbook and doing the discussion posts. 2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting? Art is a visual representation of emotions and feelings/beliefs. This is a little different from what I thought in the beginning of the course but overall it is generally the same. I learned that artists are very skilled and creative people who can transform their feelings into a visual form for people to see. Not many people can do that successfully. 3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so? In my first original posting, I did not have a specific favorite artist because I was not really aware of many. After this course, I would have to say that one of my favorite artists would be Michaelangelo because most of his works are so interesting and I find myself interpreting them in many different ways. It's interesting to me to be able to add my thoughts of what an art work is, to the actual descriptions of the art work itself. 4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different? My answer is the same as it was in my first post. I enjoy taking online classes because I can work at my own pace. I am currently a serving manager at a small restaurant so I work almost 40 hours a week plus going to school full time. It's easier for me to focus on my school work when I can do so at my own time. It is a little difficult if you don't understand something, however most professors who teach online classes are usually very quick to respond if I had any questions.

Art Criticism Video Review

The two videos I chose to watch were “Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T.J Clark” and “Introduction to Italian Renaissance”. The video interview with T.J Clark focused on his beliefs of the relationships between art and history, and the nature of value judgments in criticism. This video does relate the art criticism article project because it made me learn and realize how important judgments are and what it really takes to judge a piece of art work. There is more to just liking or disliking a work of art. I thought this video was extremely educational. I learned a lot about how to correctly criticize and it helped me when I was going through my peers exhibits. There’s a lot to focus on when you are critiquing something and this video pointed out some specifics and techniques to do so. The other video, “Introduction to Italian Renaissance” focused on how techniques were developed based on works of other people. This video displayed images of selected masterpieces that illustrate the Roman influence on Renaissance art and reinforces the concepts of perspective, balance, composition, and realism. This video related to this project in the sense that it gave me an idea of how certain techniques were developed and used when creating art. I thought this video was interesting because I was introduced to the different works of Italian Renaissance artists.

Art Critcism Article Blog

I chose the exhibit “foUnD”, created by Courtney Justus because as soon as I looked at it, I was very interested. I didn’t really have many challenges writing this article because the exhibit as put together in a way that easy to understand and very informational. I was very intrigued by the art works that she chose to interpret and I actually learned a lot from critiquing this exhibit. I liked critiquing a peer’s work because I feel that it gives us a chance to see where our peers are at with the same projects and classes that we are taking. I think I would like to read what my peers wrote about my project because I would like to see if they felt the same way as I did about the art works that I chose. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate my article at a 9. I think that I took the time to go through each art work and chose which ones meant the most to me and the ones I found to be most interesting, and further critiqued those ones. Overall, I did enjoy working on this project. I thought it was educational to go through and create my own exhibit, and take the time to see how other’s created theirs.

Art Cruation Project Blog

This project was very informational and helped me learn a lot about what it takes to be an art curator. I think that the hardest part was finding the actual images, but after I kept searching I ended up finding some really great images. The theme I chose was "Romance" and I chose this theme because I feel like romance can mean so many different things to so many people. I wanted to see how artists viewed romance and what types of images they were creating. After finding the images, I took the time to go through and interpret each image and I found that the longer I interpret a picture, the more I can get from it. I realized and learned a lot about myself and the way that I view things, by doing this project. Putting together the PowerPoint was fairly simple for me because since I am a senior in college, I have put together so many already! I found it easiest to display the image to the left, and then offer my interpretation to the right. Overall, I think this project was very educational and it helped me to learn and understand more of what artists and art curators really go through to create these amazing exhibits and galleries!

Week 13 & 14 Video Blog

The key concepts in the first video, "Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art" include the influences behind this style of art. Those influences include comic books, B-movies, rock n roll, surfing, hot rods, and Cold War images. Lowbrow is also known as "pop surrealism" and relates to Abstract Expressionism. Lowbrow also lead to the rise of female artists who contributed to the era of this art. This video didn't really relate to the theme of my project, which is Romance, but it did give me an idea on how to interpret the images of lowbrow. I thought this film was interesting and even though it didn't directly relate to my topic, it did help me understand different concepts of art that curators focus on to be successful. The second video, "Displaying Modern Art" focused on the intellectual and aesthetic issues associated with the display of art. This video also focused on the styles of exhibits, especially in museums and in the Tate Gallery. Modern Art is a very interesting style of art and does relate to many things in the modern world today. This video mildly related to the creating on my project because I need to connect all of the artworks I found to the theme of Romance and this video showed different approaches on how to do this. I learned a lot from this film about why curators do the things that they do and the reasoning behind why exhibits are set up the way they are. The third video, "Bones of Contention" focused on the remains of more than 10,000 Native Americans, found at archaeological sites across the U.S. They are now found in museums such as the Smithsonian. Tension between scientists, historians, and museum curators and Native American groups as the bones take on central role in war of alternative perspectives. The topic didn't relate to my project but the idea behind the curators "job" related to the creation of my project. I thought this video was interesting because I didn't realize things like this were happening and how discriminating it is to Native Americans. The last video, "An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and the Metropolitan" focused on the famous art curator, Philippe de Montebello. He was a director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for 31 years. He guided the acquisition of more than 84,000 works of art, demanded innovation in conservation techniques and oversaw the doubling of the physical size of this cultural institution. This video helped me to learn and understand what I should be looking for when I am interpreting the art works for my project. This video was very educational and interesting because I got to see all the different areas in which art is examined and places around exhibits and it was informational to see all of the different innovations for art curators now.

Module 12 Video Review

The two videos that I chose to watch for this module were "Power of Art: Rothko" and "Uncertainty: Modernity and Art". I chose to watch the video called "Power of Art: Rothko" because the history of Western Art interests me and I wanted to learn more about Mark Rothko. The key concepts in this video were that life, death, heroism, and tragedy are the main subjects of Western Art. Rothko focused on all of these, plus he was also interested in showing human values in his paintings. Many timeless themes dominated Rothko's thinking Many of his works of art demonstrated irony, sensuality, and more importantly tragedy because those were based on human emotions. This video focused on two art works; "The Green Stripe", and "The Black on Maroon". This video related to the readings in the textbook because they both discussed the aspects of Western Art and how other cultures viewed and adopted Western Art tactics. I thought this video was very interesting because I liked learning about the ideas and way of thinking behind Rothko's art works. I learned that he liked when people would show extreme emotion when looking at his paintings, which was actually interesting to me. I chose to watch the video "Uncertainty: Modernity and Art" because I feel that uncertainty is a positive thing when it correlates with art. The key concepts in this video were that Modern Art communicates chaos, anxiety, and uncertainty. Just by looking at Modern Art, you will be able to see the civilization aspect behind it. Pablo Picasso, Paul Kee, Piet Mondrian and the architecture of Le Corbusier were all brought up in this video to demonstrate examples of Modern Art. Womanhood and fertility were also stressed during this time. It was also mentioned in the video that cultures tried to eradicate Modern Art with the rise of Abstract Expressionism and then with Pop Art. This video relates to the text in the textbook because they both go into detail about Pop Art and how the effects of this style came from Modern Art. I thought this video was extremely interesting because it demonstrated the mysteries behind Modern Art and to me, that is a good way to look at Modern Art. People enjoy it because its unpredictable and you can never be certain what the meaning is behind it. I've come to learn that people and artists like uncertainty because it makes life a little more exciting!

Art Gallery visit #2

Step 1: The Exhibition Questions about the exhibit: 1. What is the title of the exhibit? "Let There be Light" 2. What is the theme of the exhibition? The theme of this exhibit was photography and interactive installation. There were neon colors all over the room, and video connections showing pictures of people's faces reflecting and changing configuration as the lights shined on them. It was very interesting to be in this exhibit and to experience the effect of the lights on the photography. Step 2: The Gallery Questions about the physical space: 1. What type of lighting is used? The lighting in the gallery was light, and shadowy. Certain areas were darker than others depending on which type of art was on display in each area. 2. What colors are used on the walls? The walls were light colored, white and a light tan. 3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space? The materials used were tile, paint, and water color. 4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space? The movement throughout the gallery space was rather slow because the viewer needed to take time to view all of the art work and focus on what they found to be the most important and interesting. Step 3: The Artwork Questions about the artwork: 1. How are the artworks organized? The art works were organized by theme, and by the medium used. 2. How are the artrworks similar? The art works were similar because they all had a specific meaning behind them. Also, the shapes, colors, and textures of certain art works were similar to the art works that surrounded them. 3. How are the artworks different? Some of the artworks were paintings, diagrams, sculptures, architectures etc. 4. How are the artworks framed? Some art works were displayed , some were framed, some were behind glass, and some art works were out in the open. 5. How are the artworks identified and labeled? The artworks were labeled with plaque stating their name, artist, year, and medium. 6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? I noticed that most of the paintings were located close to each other and the sculptures were more equally spaced out. Answer this question: What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.? I thought that visiting the art gallery for the purpose of this assignment was very educational. Usually, people go to art galleries for pleasure but when I actually took the time to analyze the exhibits and the space I learned a lot about the reasoning behind which art works were there. This art work is created by Charles E. Burchfield, called "Nightfall". The medium used for this art work is gouache on paper. When I looked at this photo I saw dark skies and a peaceful atmosphere. I felt that it was very relaxing to look at. This work of art is very balanced and emphasizes the shapes used throughout the picture. This art work was created by Allison Hoag, called "Inhalation", in 2012. The medium used for this work is blown and cast glass, mixed media. This work of art stuck out to me because it was really intriguing to look at. The shapes used and the texture and pattern really made it pleasing to look at. Looking into this glass pieces of this work of art allowed you to see your own reflection which was very interesting to me. This art work was created by Nancy Valle, called "Push-Pull" in 2013. The medium used to create this was terra cotta ceramic and glaze. When I first looked at this sculpture, I didn't really know what to think of it, but it did interest me. Color, texture, emphasis, and balance were all used when creating this work of art.

Module Eleven Video Review

The two videos that I chose to watch were "Expressionism" and "The Mysterical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present". I chose to watch the video "Expressionism" because after reading a little bit about it in the textbook, I wanted to learn more. In my opinion, this form of art is the perfect way for artists to be creative and create meaning behind their paintings. Some key concepts pointed out throughout the video were that expressionism emphasized color's emotional properties. Contemporary Neo-expressionism has developed this artistic approach. Overall, this style of art was technically breaking norms, which made the works of art more interesting and "wild". This video also discusses art relating to the sexuality of men and women and how colors can demonstrate the differences. This video relates to the readings in the text book because they both discuss how fauvism relates to expressionism and how it eventually led to the creation of expressionism. Also, the book and video both stressed how there was less of a concern than the Fauves had with the formal and informal composition of color. I thought this video was very informational and interesting. I enjoyed learning about how expressionism allowed different artists to express their feelings with using different colors to portray objects. I chose to watch the video about Spanish Art because to me, Spanish art and Spanish culture seems to be exotic and I wanted to learn more about the art aspect of their culture. Northern Spain has some of the world's most celebrated artists such as Picasso, Miro, Dali and Goya. Violence, revolution, and war were major influences of the art that was originated in Spain. The art during this time demonstrated artistic and social turmoil that engulfed Spain as the 20th century began. The video mentioned how Goya was known as the Father of Modern Art. The video and the text book related to each other in the aspect that they both describe how art is constantly changing and how location is a big factor on the styles of art that you will find. I thought this video was also interesting because I thought it was enjoyable to watch how intense the styles of art were in Spain during these times.

Module Ten Video Reviews

The two videos that I chose to watch were "African Art", and "Buddhism". I chose to watch the video "African Art" because this kind of art is interesting to me because of the meaning and culture that is behind every piece of art. A lot of the art comes off as "exotic" in a way and that interests me. Some key concepts of this video were that art is a part of daily for people in Africa. Sculptures, masks, architecture, ornaments, clothing, and utensils are all forms of art that are created and used on a daily basis. Also, religious beliefs in Africa are explored through the use of rituals, which is a performance art. Prehistoric rock art is also a form on African Art because of the nature behind it. This video relates to the text because they both stress the importance of the Nile River and the importance of sculptures and masks within the African Culture. I thought this video was very informational and it helped me to visualize and learn more about the African culture and how art was played into it. The other video I watched was "Buddhism", and I chose to watch this video because after reading a little about it in the textbook, I wanted to know more. Some of the key concepts in this video were that the birth of Buddhism was seen through architecture and art. Buddhism eventually spread throughout other lands and many people were beginning to follow the beliefs behind Buddhism, The Bodh Gaya represents the fact and legend of Buddhism and is the largest Buddhism shrine available. This video related to the text book because they both went into detail about how influential Buddhism was, especially with its relevance to art. Buddhism enlightened many people. I thought that this video was extremely interesting because I think it's important for people to know about the different belief systems that were around in the past. It was also a good representation of how important the use o f certain art influenced the Buddhist people and followers.

Exploring Line

I thought it was a little difficult to use my hands as a subject matter for drawing. Even though the actual shapes used to draw a hand are pretty easy to construct, I still felt like all of my trail drawings didn't turn out so good! I used a pencil to do my drawing because I felt that it would be a little easier than using charcoal because charcoal tends to smudge more than a regular pencil. Creating a drawing with my non-dominant hand was actually really uncomfortable! It just didn't feel natural, however the drawing came out a lot better than I thought it would. I think that the drawing using my dominant hand actually came out really nice. I even included details such as the acrylic nails that I currently have on, and the lines of my knuckles. I am a little impressed with how the drawing using my non-dominant hand turned out, but I don't think I would consider using my non-dominant hand to create art work in the future simply because it was just uncomfortable to do.

Module 9 Video Reviews

The two videos I chose to watch were "The Drawings of Michaelangelo" and "Leonardo Di Vinci: Mind of the Renaissance". I chose these videos because I find the works of Michaelangelo and Di Vinci to be very interesting and the time period of the Renaissance has always been an interest to me. The video about Leonardo Di Vinci demonstrated that he was a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and student of anatomy, physiology, botany, architecture, hydrodynamics, aeronautics, and other disciplines. Leonardo Di Vinci started out painting when he was very young. He incorporated many philosophical thoughts and beliefs with his masterpieces. Symbolism was an important factor for Leonardo Di Vinci also. It was stated in the video that Di Vinci and Michaelangelo were rivals, which is another reason why I chose to watch these two specific videos. This video relates to the readings in the book because the concept of beauty plays an important role in the Renaissance and also in most of Leonardo's work. Also, the human body was looked at differently and started to become important to people during the Renaissance. I think that this video was very informational and helped me visualize more of what the art works were like during the Renaissance. The main concepts discussed in the video about Michaelangelo was that he always second thoughts about his drawings and was a perfectionist about them before he allowed anyone else to view them. This video focused on art students comparing his preparatory drawings with his finished masterworks. The pieces that were analyzed throughout the video were "Pieta", "Colossal David", "Sistine Chapel", "The last Judgement", "The Medici Tomb", and "St. Peter's Basilica". This video also went into detail about the tools, techniques, stylist evolution, and sexuality of Michaelangelo. This video related to the readings in the book because it went into detail about the materials that were used to create all of the works. For example, the use of charcoal, pencil, plaster, paint etc, were all mentioned in the book and in the video. Also, the readings discussed how Michaelangelo focused on perfecting human body parts and making them beautiful, and the video showed a visualization of that concept. I also thought this video was very informational because we got to see how other students view Michaelangelo's works and the process of how they were all created.

Module 8: Video Review

The two videos I watched were "More Human than Human", and "The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and Human Design". The first video, "More Human than Human", focused on the discovery that art history reveals that we prefer images that actually don't look like us. Venus and Willendorf created one of the oldest representations of the body ever found. All of these discoveries have shown that the brain is hardwired to favor exaggeration. They are so many ranges of the human body that artists have created during this time. This video relates to the readings in the book because the same statue found in the book was also used in the video. It was the statue that was found of the women and the reason why it is important is because it shows that the world is so prominent on unrealistic images. The different styles of the human form from the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans were mentioned in both the video and readings. I chose to watch the second video about Greek art and the human design because I have always thought that Greek art was fascinating and very interesting to look at and learn about. This video went through and demonstrated the cultural transformation of Greek Art from religious functions to human-centered form. The Greeks began to create human forms for Gods, people, and even animals. Realism began to evolve in the process of creating these sculptures. It has been said that the Greeks were "obsessed" with the human body and humanity's place in nature which is why there was so much emphasis on creating these forms. The type of realism changed art forever. The sense of ideal beauty became more important rather than real beauty.

Module 7 Video Review

The two videos I chose to watch were "Architecture: Science of Design", and "Imperial Rome, Ostia, and Portus: Ancient Architecture and Technology". The key concepts of the Science of Design video started off as explaining that Architecture is not only an art, is a science. Another key concept is that concrete, which is a construction material, because the symbol of modern architecture and is undergoing improvement. The video spent a lot of time going through the process of creating sky scrapers. There are two parts of a skyscraper which are the super structure, and the underground substructure. This video related to the readings in the book because it went into depth about how the environment affects architectural structures. The video gave a clear explanation of how sky scrapers are built due to being able to survive in certain weather conditions. It's important that all buildings are made this way and that's why the science behind architecture is so important. It was interesting to learn about the "intelligent home". It's kind of crazy to see that a lot of household features could be programmed and executed automatically. Sooner or later, before we know it, many people will be having houses like these ones! I chose to watch this video because I wanted to learn more about the science aspect of architecture as well as the art aspect. The Imperial Rome video went into detail about Ostia and Portus, which are the 2 main centers. The architecture that went into these are extraordinary and very interesting to learn about. The use of brick-faced concrete is the main building material used during these times. Ancient Roman architecture is interesting to me because it is so detailed and beautiful and you can really tell how much work went into creating constructing them. The Pantheon is such a historical and interesting structure. Many different types of structures went into this building. The body of the building is round and there are many statues of Gods placed throughout the building. I chose to watch this video because I wanted to learn more about ancient architecture. Looking at historical architecture is interesting because you can see that a lot of the same procedures and materials used back then, are still used today.

Video Review

The main focus in the Eyes of the Sculptor video was that Sculptor Emmanuael Fillion created a figurative clay model to a life-size marble sculpture. Some key concepts that I got from this video was that sculpting is a very time consuming, prestigious process that stems from earlier centuries. Fillion traveled and visited many historical monuments to learn about different techniques for sculpting. He compared present-day carving and sculpting with other methods that have been used for centuries. Some key concepts in the Glass and Ceramics video was the ideas being the two techniques of Glass Blowing and the art of stained glass windows. This video also went into detail about the production of ceramics, which is now very commonly being used in new applications. Next, the Glass and Ceramics video went into great detail about the use of glass architecture and how important it has become. The videos both showed a visual explanation of the processes that we read about in the book. Sculpting is a fine art/craft because you need to be highly skilled and be able to create and emphasize detail while sculpting. The book and movie went into great detail about what really goes into these fine arts and crafting. The Glass video demonstrated the use of ceramics in the real world, which the book also went into as well. These new techniques are becoming more and more useful for people these days. I thought that both of these films were very informational. It was interesting to see how important the process of sculpting is. Sculpting is a craft because you have to take the time to create it, using your skills and your creative mind. I thought the glass video was extremely interesting because I enjoyed learning about the art behind stained glass windows. You see these types of windows around but most people don't really take the time to think about the process that went into actually creating them. It's actually a very fascinating process. It was also really interesting to be able to see how glass architecture is increasingly replacing wood and stone architecture. All of these new techniques I viewed in these videos gave me a better understanding of how important the use of sculpture, installation and craft really is on our daily lives.

When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images? For Casey's project, I did agree with all of the elements and principles that he listed with the images. I think that he was very creative when it came to finding the right picture for each one. A lot of the images did include other elements and principles. For example, in his image that he felt demonstrated "Shape", I also saw "Line" in there and in the image for "Color" he used a picture of a boat in the water and to me, that also demonstrated movement. For Jessica's project, I also thought she did a great job with the images that she selected. I have noticed that almost every image demonstrates many different elements and principles. A few that stuck out to me in Jessica's project was in her image for "Movement", I also noticed that "Shape" and "Unity" could also be used in that particular image. 3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own? Casey and I unfortunately did not have any of the same images in our blogs from this project. Jessica and I also didn't have any of the same images. There were so many interesting works of art at Albright that can mean many different things to many different people so I'm not too surprised that none of us picked the same ones. It was interesting to see how other people viewed some of the art that I also viewed! 4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them? Yes, the image that Casey took of (Students of Kenmore East High School, Hurt to Hope, 2013) sparked my interest because even thought it was a student exhibit piece, the message that Casey pulled from it stuck out to me and helped me see the piece in a new light. It enforces a really powerful statement about bullying. 5. What do you think about the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning? I actually learned a lot about how people view works of art. I realized that each image can mean anything that someone wants it to. You imagination is what makes art what it is. It was really interesting for me to see what kinds of feelings my peers got from looking at the images. It gave me a different perspective of each of the images because I saw what I saw and interpreted it in my own way, then I also saw how they viewed it and that made sense as well. It's pretty crazy how images can be so controversial. 6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful? I really enjoyed reading the comments from my peers because it gave me a chance to hear some feedback about the projects that we have all completed. It was nice to see that some people also felt the same connections to the same images that I did.

Art Gallery Visit

The first art work is by Giacomo Balla, called "Dinamismo di un Cane al Guinzaglio" in 1871, oil on canvas. This art work made an impression on me because it is a picture of a dog on a leash and I love animals, especially dogs, and I really enjoyed viewing this painting for that reason. The second art work is by Joan Miro called "Carnival d'Arlequin" in 1983 using oil on canvas as well. This picture made an impression on me because to me it seemed the picture was all over the place and there were a lot of things going on in the picture and sometimes I feel like that is how my life is. It was interesting to me to try to follow the picture and figure out what was going on. The third art work is by Henri Matisse called "Le Musique" in 1869 using oil on canvas. I felt a connection with this picture because I really enjoy listening to music and learning about music and in the picture the two women and playing and listening to music. The fourth work of art is by Edouard Vuillard called "The Painter Ker-Xavier Roussel and his Daughter" in 1903 using oil on cardboard. I felt a connection with this work of art because I am very close with my father and it was nice to see a picture of father and daughter spending time together because I try to do this as much as I can with my dad. The fifth work of art is by Edwin Walter Dickinson called "An Anniversary" in 1891 using oil on canvas. I want to know more about this artwork because it involved a gathering of people who seem to be having fun and celebrating an anniversary but what are they celebrating? Where are they? There's a lot of questions I had after viewing this work of art. The sixth, and last work of art is by Stuart Davis called "New York Waterfront" in 1938 using oil on canvas. I would like to know more about this picture because it's kind of hard to make out what the artist is really trying to convey in this picture. The colors helped me to understand and picture a water front a little better and I can pick out a picture of a boat in there but I would like to know what influenced this artist to create this painting the way that he did. One of the main discoveries that I noticed as I walking through the art gallery was that a number of the works of art I viewed were made using oil on canvas.

Logo

I thought that creating my logo was actually a fun experience. It gave me an opportunity to think about ways to describe myself on paper. The process of creating my logo started out with a few sketches of a few things that I thought described me. For example, I am a waitress so for my logo I chose to draw myself holding serving tray. Then I also took some time to think about some other things that described me or my interests. After some sketches, I decided to draw a picture of my dog and a picture of my favorite designer purse brand because those are two things that are important to me. I love to shop in my free time and I also love animals so I felt that drawing those on my serving tray would make a good logo to describe myself. The most important discovery I made while creating my logo was that there are so many different things a person could draw to describe themselves. It was a little difficult at first to come up with some ideas for my logo but after watching the video, PowerPoint and reading the material, I began to have a better idea of what to draw. The reading material also helped me realize how important a logo is to companies. A logo must be unique or it won't stand apart from other companies.

Art Making/Material Exploration

1.I thought that creating the value scale with the charcoal was very interesting. It was interesting to see the different shades that a charcoal pencil could make. It was entertaining to mix colors together to create other colors. I have never really understood the meaning and reasoning behind the color wheel so after reading and watching the videos and actually creating my own color wheel, I learned a lot about how it works. 2.I liked working with the paint because I had fun playing with many different colors to create new colors. It’s amazing how many different colors can come from one base color. 3.What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies? The most important discovery of these studies was that the only colors used were different shades of black and white and now the use of the color wheel has brought about the use of color, starting with the primary colors. Now there are many different colors used in today’s 4.The color theory video was very informational because it helped me to create my own color wheel. I wasn’t sure exactly how and where each color went and the video helped me to start the project. I also learned more about primary colors and why they are the primary colors. The video demonstrating how to create a value scale helped me to learn the correct way to shade and distinguish between lights, mediums and darks. The step by step instructions helped me to better understand how to create this value scale.

Color Theory and Emotional Effects

1. Specific colors can have cultural or individual links to other things in life, better known as symbols. For example, the color red symbolizes danger and anger but at the same time it can also symbolize joy or love. The color yellow indicates sickness or ill health but it can so also symbolize a warm sunny summer day. Only context can provides clues as to what a color's meaning is or what emotional impact it may have. People's emotions change as well as the meaning behind certain colors. 2. The theatrical aspect of color scheme is something that fascinates me. Monochromatic color schemes have a unifying effect and are created by changing the value of one single color. It is very interesting to me that by choosing two colors on the opposite sides of the color wheel you can create a complementary color scheme. I didn't realize that there were so many different color schemes such as a split-complementary color scheme which is created by selecting a color and two hues on either side of the original color. The last thing that intrigued me about color schemes was the idea of a triadic color scheme. This is formed by colors that form an equilateral triangle on the color wheel. Overall, it amazes me the color wheel can serve so many purposes. 3. I thought that the color video was very interesting and informational. Colors and art allow people to put their fantasies down on paper. Humans moods are always changing, as well as art and colors are always changing. What interested me the most was the fact that the color red seemed to be most used in paintings. Whether it was used as the color main or just an added color, this color seemed to be one of the first colors used to express emotions and feelings. The color red can have many meanings behind it. 4. The images and reasoning behind the images of the church in this video is what was most interesting to me. There were many theories about different religions and such back then so by seeing all of the works of art including the church was interesting because they were images of what artists "felt" happened or what they felt looked like.

Project 1

sankeyal01's Project 1 album on Photobucket
For this project, I drove down to Niawanda Park in Tonawanda with a friend and took a walk down by the water to explore the elements of art and the principles of design. I spent a great deal of time exploring all different objects that I encountered along the way. For example, for the principle of movement, I captured a picture of the moving water in the river. The picture I took captured the rippling of the water which added a really interesting effect. I also noticed a lot of "pops" of color around me. The picture I took to demonstrate color was a picture of a red car in the park parking lot that was surrounded by yellow lines, green grass, brown and green trees and a white house in the background. I also captured an awesome picture that illustrated the principle of emphasis. The picture consisted of a white bird feather peacefully lying on the ground surrounded by bright green grass. As I was on this walk and searching for examples of these elements and principles, I realized how art really does play into everyday life, especially nature. Every little detail I noticed related to these principles and elements in some way. Some pictures demonstrated a number of these things. I have walked through this park a number of times before but I never stopped to notice all of the little things that make it truly beautiful. This project helped to me realize and understand the reasoning and explanation behind all of the beauty that I was seeing. Art has a way of allowing something so plain to be so beautiful and interesting at the same time.

Module 2 Post

1.  Aesthetics-Philosophy of the Arts
-discuss different philosophers views on aethetics
-Plato was the first, main philosopher who set the foundation for ideas about beauty and ideas behind aesthetics.
-Aristotle focused on the art form of Tragedy. Tragedy became a very popular form of art during the 4th century due to Artistotle's theories.
-Francis Hutcheson focused on and believed that "morality" was the main idea behind aesthetics. He believed that humans have a sense of beauty and harmony.

CARTA Video
-Focused on the link between science and art.
-Changeaux focused symbolism and symmetry and also believes that artistic ability comes from genetics. He believes that works of art are human productions and are a form on non-verbal communication.
-Creation comes from ancestor, evolution over time
-Focused on the "bottom up processing of visual images"
-He concluded with a quote that I found very interesting and that stuck with me, the quote was "Art makes us aware of oneself as another"
-Ramachandran created and followed the 8 laws of art
-The part of his lecture that stuck out to me was when he said that every act of perception involved judgement. It made me realize that people do judge people on a regular basis even when they don't realize it.

Art and Neuroscience Article
-Focuses on how art is a "lie" that makes us realize the truth
-Describes how lines, faces, and color all add to the end result of artwork and how the brain interprets all of these aspects
-Demonstrates the meaning behind pieces of art work from the past. For example, the Mona Lisa.

2. As previously discussed in my video reflection, I feel that Francis Hutcheson's theory of Aesthetics was very important. He believed that morality was most important and I agree with him on that aspect. I had a difficult time choosing between Plato and Hutchenson because I think that both philosophers had very important views on aesthetics but to me, morality is a very important factor in life and in art,

3. Changeux and Ramachandran both had very educational views on the link between science and art. The importance of symmetry and symbolism was demonstrated throughout both of these lectures. Changeux focused more on how artistic abilities is genetic and changed and developed with evolution. As I mentioned earlier in the blog, I thought that the most interesting thing that Ramachandran stated was that every act of perception involved judgement. I learned a lot about how perception and art are linked and that's why art can be so different and mean different things to different people.

4. The videos and the article all related to each other in a number of ways. The main focus of all three information resources was Aesthetics. Another common aspect among these were why art is created and why it is important to create art. After reading and watching these videos and article, I learned a lot about why it is important to study art and that art is more than just "pretty pictures and structures". I also never realized how science and art are linked to each other and each of these information tools tended to reflect upon the different ways that those two are linked to each other.

5. I thought that the videos were both very educational. I really enjoyed reading the article because I felt like I could relate and understand it a little better than the videos. I found it interesting to learn about all of the different views on aesthetics and more about how genetics could have a lot to do with artistic abilities within individuals. Before reading this article and watching these videos, I did not know how complex art and the history of art was. The first video on aesthetics really gave me a better understanding of how art has changed as the centuries went on. I definitely learned a lot from module 2.

Blog 1

1. How was the process of creating the GMail account and setting up the Blog?
The process of creating GMail and setting up the blog was a little confusing for me, but I ended up getting it done. I've never had to use GMail or Blogger before so for me it was a learning experience. I think that these are good learning tools and I'm hoping that I get a little better at using them for this course.

2. What do you expect to learn in this course?
By taking this course, I am expecting to learn more about the history of art, learn about some important artists, and learn different ways to create my own art. I do not consider myself to be very artistic so I am hoping to learn ways I can change that.

3. How do you feel about taking an online course?
I think online courses are a great thing for college students who commute to school. It is very convenient to take a class that you can plan around your schedule and find out when is best for you to complete all of the assignments. Although online classes lack the benefit of face-to-face meeting with a professor and a class, I think that communicating through ANGEL is just as effective. I have taken a few online courses before but this one seems to be the most intense one I have taken. All of my other online classes only used ANGEL and we communicated through ANGEL not GMail, or Blogger. I'm interested to see how differently this online course will be from the previous ones I have taken.
